Gas Leak Detection Redhead

Gas leak detection in Redhead finds the joint, connector or tap letting gas out, whether you smell it at the hob or near an old pipe run. A licensed gas fitter tests the pipework with a gas detector, marks the leak and fixes it for a fixed price you agree to first. Ring or use the form to book.

This page is about finding and fixing leaks. New appliances and pipe runs sit under gas fitting, and drains and hot water are with our plumber in Redhead team.

Smell Gas? Get Everyone Out First

With a strong or sudden smell, the house comes first and the leak second. In this order:

  • Take everyone, pets included, out into the yard or street.
  • Leave light switches, power points and appliances as they are.
  • Open doors as you go, provided it is safe.
  • From outside, phone the gas emergency number.
  • Once they have made it safe, ring us on (02) 4093 0558 to find and repair the leak inside the property.

An on-and-off faint whiff still needs checking soon. A weeping joint does not seal itself, and it only gets worse.

How Do You Know It Is Leaking?

Look, listen and smell for these:

  • The sulphur smell of the odourant blended into natural gas, at the hob, a heater or the meter.
  • A soft hissing at a fitting that you only notice at night.
  • A strip of dying lawn or shrubs over a buried gas pipe.
  • Soapy water brushed on a reachable fitting that starts to bubble.
  • A gas bill that climbs while your cooking and heating stay the same.

One of these is reason to book a detector check. Two at once makes it urgent.

Why Gas Lines Fail Here

Salt does the damage

Spray carried by the onshore wind pits bare copper and corrodes brass flanges early, and Redhead ranks with the harshest corrosion spots in the council area.

Age adds to it

Weatherboard and fibro houses built before 1940 or in the post-war decades have gas joints that were never made for a lifetime of coastal air.

How Does Leak Detection Get Priced?

A leak price rests mostly on how long the hunt takes:

  • Finding it A leak at a visible cooktop hose shows up fast. One somewhere in a long concealed run takes more testing.
  • The fix A new flexible hose or union costs less than cutting in a fresh length of pipe.
  • Reaching it Pipe behind built-in cabinetry or deep in a subfloor adds time.
  • Night and weekend work The after-hours rate applies, and it is quoted on the phone.

Old Runs and the Streets Behind the Bluff

The 1894 township grid is the oldest housing here

The grid surveyed for the private mining township takes in Steel, Collier and Cowlishaw streets, and homes there have lost generations of fittings to onshore spray. When we fix one leak on an old run, we test the rest of that run too.

Outside fittings take the spray

Houses near Redhead Beach catch the onshore wind off the surf, and any fitting on an outside wall gets it. Replacements outside go in marine-rated.

When We're Not the Right Call

A leak in the distributor's meter or street supply is fixed by them, not us. A gas hot water unit due for a service belongs under hot water, a new hob or bayonet is gas appliance installation, and a dripping water pipe is water leak detection.

Gas Leak Questions From These Streets

How do you find a gas leak in a Redhead home without pulling up floors?

A pressure test shows whether any gas is escaping, even with no smell. Then the detector goes along each exposed run, joint by joint, to the connector or tap at fault. Digging only comes into it when the leak is on a buried section.

Does the salt air here wear out gas pipes faster?

It does. Saltwater corrosion pits the copper, brass flanges and flexible connectors mounted outside, since the onshore wind carries spray inland all year. We check exposed fittings for pitting whenever we are on a gas job.

Is there a call-out fee for a gas leak visit?

It costs nothing to get us out to your door (excluding after-hours). A night or weekend leak visit carries the higher out-of-hours charge, and you hear it on the phone before a gas fitter drives over.

Who fixes a leak at the gas meter itself?

The meter and the pipe feeding it from the street are the distributor's property, so a leak at that point is theirs to fix. From the meter outlet onward, through the walls to every appliance, the repair is ours.
