The gas work splits two ways: putting something new on the line, or finding out why the line is losing gas.

When Should You Call a Gas Fitter?

Anything that opens the gas line is licensed work. Book one when you have:

  • A kitchen rework that needs the hob or oven moved or swapped
  • A deck that wants a bayonet for the barbecue or a patio heater
  • A pilot light that drops out, or burners showing ragged yellow tips
  • A new smell at the meter, the cooktop or a heater
  • Green or flaking corrosion on copper where it runs along an outside wall

Watch the flame. Clean combustion is blue. Yellow or orange means poor burning, so leave that appliance off until it is checked.

How Does a Gas Job Get Priced?

"We had an urgent gas problem that required immediate attention at our home…on a Friday afternoon. … Identified the issue, fixed and tested" Lee

On gas work the price starts with the length of new pipe:

  • Pipe length Teeing a bayonet off a line that already reaches the deck is quick. Feeding a heater at the far end of the house means metres of new copper.
  • Getting to it Crawling a low subfloor or opening a lined wall adds hours that an open garage run never needs.
  • Coastal-grade fittings Marine-rated brass costs more up front and holds up far longer against the salt here.

A customer's words after a Friday afternoon gas fault:

Salt Air and Your Gas Fittings

Redhead air eats bare metal

Saltwater corrosion is the local enemy: the salt-laden onshore wind makes this one of the harshest spots in the Lake Macquarie council area for corrosion, and exposed gas copper, brass unions and flexible connectors feel it first.

Older weatherboard and fibro houses, older gas pipe

Much of the housing here went up before 1940 or through the 1940s to 1960s, so plenty of gas pipe has been in the wall a long time. When a new appliance goes on, we look at the old section feeding it and replace it if the joints are tired, before it gives trouble.

Nothing gets closed up untested

Every run we touch gets a pressure test and a detector sweep, since a thread can seep gas while looking perfectly sound.

From Your Call to a Commissioned Appliance

  1. 01

    Ring or send the form

Call (02) 4093 0558 or use the form to explain the fault. We ask enough to bring the right equipment the first time.

  2. 02

    A fixed price first

A plumber inspects the job and names a fixed figure up front. Nothing gets started until you give the go-ahead.

  3. 03

    Fit and prove it

The gas fitter installs the pipe or remakes the leaking joint, holds the line under test, then lights and adjusts the appliance.

  4. 04

    Covered for a year

Every job carries our 365-day warranty on all work. If something we did isn't right, ring the same number.

When We're Not the Right Call

Gas lost from the meter body, or from the pipe under the street, belongs to the gas distributor, so their faults line is the call. We handle everything from the meter outlet into the house. If it's unclear which side the fault is on, ask us on the phone first.

What Else Runs Off the Same Van

Some gas questions end up somewhere else. Picking a continuous-flow or storage heater belongs with hot water systems, a fault at night goes to the emergency plumber, and water escaping rather than gas is water leak detection.

Gas Questions From Redhead Homes

Do you connect gas BBQs and outdoor heaters in Redhead?

Yes. A bayonet on the deck, a fixed BBQ line or a patio heater is licensed gas fitter work, priced before a hole is drilled. Once the fitting is in, the new pipe holds a pressure test and the connection gets a detector pass before we pack up.

A faint gas smell near my cooktop. Should I call you first?

If it is strong or sudden, get people out, leave switches alone and ring the gas distributor's faults line first. A faint smell at the hob is ours to chase. We check the cooktop connection and the pipe behind it with a detector and fix the joint that is weeping.

Does salt air shorten the life of gas pipework too?

It does. Exposed copper and brass on the weather side of a house take the onshore spray all year, and joints corrode long before the pipe does. Marine-rated fittings at install time cost less than chasing corroded unions later.

Can you service a gas hot water unit as well as fit one?

Yes. We install gas storage cylinders and continuous-flow units, and we service and repair them too. If yours is failing and you are weighing repair against a new one, our hot water page walks through that decision.
